There is a more detailed account, which goes by moons and will be kept up-to-date as the plot progresses, in another thread, but this is just a general overview of what's going on.
The disappearances of clan cats were seen as simply accidents, normal and unavoidable, until those cats who vanished came back. Instead of joining their own clan they formed a new one; Stormclan. The leaders of the four original clans decided that they would meet alone in a secret place on the new moon but when the night came the Windclan leader never showed up. The three remaining clan found the next day that the entire clan had vanished, not leaving even a scent trail.
The Riverclan leader pleaded with the other clans to send search patrols, but Riverclan and Shadowclan were unwilling to risk their warriors on what seemed to be a pointless journey. Shortly afterward, the Stormclan leader Nezumi asked permission for his clan to be included in gatherings and allowed access to the moonpool. He was denied and before he left he promised the leaders that every cat in their clan would be drinking their own blood before he was through with them.
Almost overnight Shadowclan and Thunderclan formed an alliance against Stormclan, and possibly Riverclan. Nezumi has offered help to Riverclan in exchange for a debt to be payed in the future, but nothing has been decided quite yet.
Underneath the entangling alliances is yet another secret; the Stormclan cats are not exactly what they seem to be. Each one of them is able to shift into another animal, though no one outside of their clan knows of this secret.
